If you are familiar with my blog, you know by now that my husband has become a fanatic--a hiking and snowshoeing FANATIC!! He will talk your arm off on either topic; just give him an opportunity--or not. Unfortunately for Rich, who didn't squelch the idea from day #1, Bill planned a short hike for the two of them. So early in the week they donned warm clothes and hiking boots, packed water bottles for Rich and a "bladder" (you read it correctly) for Bill and some GORP (good old raisins & peanuts) for snacking, grabbed their poles and were off to Bear Lake from which many trails begin.
It has been so warm (40s & 50s) this visit with very little snow even at that altitude that it promised to be a simple hike of a mile or two. As I understand, they didn't try to set any speed records; however, they did encounter some packed snow and ice on the trail for which they were unprepared. They didn't take a camera with them, but I would have paid money to see "veteran" hiker Bill's face when he was the one who slipped and fell on his derriere. No injuries.
When they returned, Rich had enjoyed the trek but said that he was not ready for more of a climbing hike--say, Twin Sisters. Does Bill have a convert to hiking? Time will tell. Rich is probably lucky that conditions were not conducive to taking a snowshoe trip. I couldn't have kept hubby at home!
