To Southern Colorado, Day 3

John, Becky, Linda, Bill at breakfast in Lamar, CO

What exactly caused our disappointment with a Best Western motel? 1. The non-smoking room smelled of old cigarette smoke. They offered to move us upstairs and around to the other side; however, it was late, we were tired, and we wanted to stay on the same side of the place as our riding partners. An employee brought us room spray. 2. The drains were slow in both the tub and the sink. 3. The hand soap bar had been re-wrapped in its paper. 4. The a/c ran on high all night and failed to really cool. 5. The cup dispenser fell off the wall. 6. There were BUGS in the bathroom! We were not sorry to hit the road after breakfast this morning!

The route from Lamar to Pueblo has several small towns that are just depressing. Never mind the heat--the yards were unkempt with either dirt and junk or high weeds, houses needed paint and repairs, business buildings were empty, very few businesses--and town after town was that way. In Pueblo we made a Walmart stop. That's right, folks! We passed Walmart stores two whole days without stopping! Finally, on this third day we needed water, soda, and picnic stuff for our coolers. PICNIC?? Right. We will be in picnic weather today.

Picnicing in a shady park in Canon City, CO

Actually, we found a park in Canon City where there was lots of shade and a cool breeze. (Another couple pulled in and tried to race us to the table!) Lunch was good and cheap; the time was relaxing and the visit was fun. From here we began to climb to higher elevations and cooler temps. Scenery began to change from flat dirt to hilly with green foliage. The weather began to change as well. Soon we were riding in rain. We got somewhat wet before reaching a McDs in Salida where we took cover and had three coffees and one soda.

Once we were on the road again, we rode non-stop to Montrose not even taking time on Monarch Pass this time. This was one beautiful ride--the Blue Mesa Reservoir, the mtns, the valleys, the sunshine.

Our reserved motel in Montrose, Country Lodge, was a beautiful sight to see as well. These are well-decorated, rustic rooms surrounding a courtyard containing a pool and hot tub. We just step out our sliding door at the back of the room and we're on the pool deck. Well, we skipped all that tonight. After a late supper at the Red Barn, we all hit the showers and bed.

I have pictures. Theywill be posted in the a.m. My camera battery is charging! Night, all.
