NASCAR Race Weekend, Part 1

For several years, we have traveled to Bob & Melanie's to stay during the NASCAR race. This race has always been an afternoon race--qualifying, Busch series, and cup race held on Friday-Sunday. However, this year's was scheduled for afternoon qualifying and night Nationwide Series and Cup. Because of this change the crowd (10 of them) left right after an early lunch rather than in the early, early morning. That meant that they returned here about 1:00 a.m. or so.

Four-year-old Jonah is as much of a race fan as one so young can be; therefore, he was broken-hearted to learn that he was not going along. His daddy intended to take him to the qualifying trials when a meeting at work wrecked those plans, but Jonah didn't realize that this knocked him out of going at all. His tears and begging to go along broke Gpa and Gma's hearts. It was my job to keep him from running outside to his daddy. When he could get loose, Jonah ran to the garage door to find it closed and cars gone. He certainly didn't want anything to do with me then, since I had kept him from going. Mommy was able to comfort him enough that he got interested in cartoons, though it was awhile before the occasional sniff-sniffs ceased.

A promised trip to McDonald's playland helped to assuage his grief as well. Jonah got to play as long as he wanted and had ice cream to boot. He also loves to take little trips in Gpa and Gma's van to watch a movie no matter how short the trip. In the evening we made a race ticket for him to clip to his shirt, put his booster seat in Daddy's recliner, and served him snacks and a drink, all in time for the start of the race on TV. When the race got completely boring, Jonah got another special treat--playing games on Gma's computer. All in all, the afternoon's activities were several steps above a ticket to the Friday night race--in my opinion.
