Two weeks of breathing mountain air and enjoying mountain views is my hubby's desire before another tax season begins; therefore, we left our daughter and son-in-law's home at 5:30 this morning heading west. It had been snowing in the night so the roads were snow-covered and slick. In addition, the snow was still falling this morning. I was nervous. We have front-wheel drive and hubby was being so very careful; we drove for miles at 40 and 45 mph. On I-80 the snowpack was less, but the road was just as slick as the little orange triangle on the dash showed slippage of the wheels from time to time. It wasn't until we got to Des Moines that we saw a bit of sunshine, less snow and some dry pavement.
Along the way we noted more than ten tractor-trailers and over 25 cars whose drivers were victims of the road conditions. Below are examples:
A pick-up truck in the median

This pick-up truck was originally headed west, but it did a 180 and was in the lane facing oncoming traffic for a moment before it slid around and out of the way of the truck passing behind. The truck then came to rest on the edge of the median as you see here.
I didn't realize that I had the camera set on video in the next two items--a car in the median and a tractor-trailer jackknifed far out on the shoulder.
Where we stopped tonight, we met friends and family who will go on with us to Estes Park for a week. In the morning we travel on and make a few stops along the way. I'll take pics and post a bit of text telling of our adventures and fun together.
