Love or Leave It?

One learns interesting things when initiating a conversation with people you never met before. We were having supper at the Big Horn Restaurant the other evening. Our waiter had a bit of an accent, so I asked him where he called home. Slovakia was his reply. I was thinking, "Does he mean Czechoslovakia?" when he clarified that for me. "It used to be Czechoslovakia," he said, "but the country has been divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia." My knowledge of European geography is almost nil; isn't that pathetic?

Anyway, he looked the age of someone not long out of high school. When I asked what he was doing in the states this summer, he told us that he came to work. He said these mountains were much like those in his own country, and the money was good though not as good as it used to be. This was his fourth summer in Colorado. When at home, he studies pre-law in the Czech Republic and is almost finished. He hopes to get into international law some day and come back to the states. He was a very nice young man.

This incident brought to mind once again those people who constantly criticize our country for one reason or another. If there is so much wrong with the USA, why do so many want to come here--legally or illegally? And, if there is so much about the USA that ticks off these people, why don't they move permanently to Europe, Canada, or Mexico? I get a bit touchy when those who are able to get the eye and ear of the TV cameras broadcast never-ending criticism and sarcasm toward our country. Of course, I realize that our troups are out there protecting their right to do so. It is nice, though, when a voice of patriotism is heard on occasion. God bless the troups and the USA!
